What is DACUM?

DACUM is an acronym for Develop a Curriculum. It is a facilitated storyboarding process that uses high performing incumbent workers (HPIW) in a field to identify the Duties and Tasks associated with a particular job function. The theory behind using these panel members is that those working at a superior level in the field are the best qualified to analyse and assess the job, and to make recommendations about training for new employees and upgrading for the veterans.

The resulting DACUM chart becomes the basis for developing job descriptions, training curricula, and occupational standards.

The session requires a neutral, skilled facilitator, familiar with the DACUM process, to guide the panel. The initial process takes 1-2 days; a vetting process with managers and supervisors may follow.

How can you use a DACUM chart?

The DACUM chart is very useful in the development or refining of jobs. If you are creating a new job, the incumbent workers will be people who are very familiar with the purpose and function of the position to be developed. It helps to crystalize the inherent duties and tasks necessary to the successful completion of the job.

A DACUM chart is very helpful in the development and design of training programs because it breaks down the duties and tasks to manageable pieces. If you have a developer on staff, they can use the chart to break training down into modules and lesson plans so that they accurately reflect the work priorities.

For staff development, the DACUM chart helps prioritize components of a job so that objective performance measurements can be established and deficiencies can be recognized and remedied. Occupational standards can be written and used for measurement.
